MTF Surgery Recovery

Recovery after vaginoplasty, breast augmentation, facial feminization, voice and body work looks very different from one operation to the next. After a breast augmentation most people are back at a desk in about a week. After a vaginoplasty you spend four to six nights in hospital, three to four weeks near your surgeon, and a lifetime keeping up the dilation that protects your result. Each procedure page has its own recovery timeline. What follows is the practical detail that applies across them, so you know what is coming and can meet each stage with confidence.

Start with the recovery timeline. It puts every procedure side by side, from hospital stay to final result, then walks through what is normal at each stage and which changes mean ringing your surgeon.

The first weeks

After genital surgery, the first weeks revolve around dilation. It starts in hospital with a nurse, runs several times a day for the first months, and tapers slowly for years. It is the one part of recovery that is yours to carry, and the guide sets out the schedule, the kit and what makes it easier.

Pain management explains what you are likely to go home with after each kind of operation, what helps besides tablets, and the kinds of pain that are a warning rather than ordinary soreness.

In the Bangkok hospitals where I have coordinated patients, the questions in week one after vaginoplasty are nearly always about dilation and swelling. By week three they have turned into questions about flights home and going back to work.

Getting back to normal

Time off work depends on your job as much as your surgery. A desk job after facial feminization and a physical job after vaginoplasty are months apart. There are ranges for each, plus what to plan when you are recovering abroad.

Spotting problems early

Complications names the ones to know: haematoma and infection after any operation, granulation tissue and loss of depth after vaginoplasty, capsular contracture after implants, and the voice changes that need a scope rather than patience. For each, you will learn how you would notice it and what usually happens next.

Most recoveries go to plan, and when one does not, catching the problem early is what turns it around. This is information, not medical advice. Your surgeon's discharge instructions come first, and if something worries you, ring them.
